Ilioinguinal Nerve Block

What is ilioinguinal nerve block?

Ilioinguinal nerve supplies skin over the pubic area and upper inner thigh. The nerve can be damaged by surgery or scar tissue following hernia repair resulting in pelvic pain and/or groin pain. An ilio-inguinal nerve block involves the injection of local anaesthetic close the ilio-inguinal nerve under ultrasound-guidance. This injection can be diagnostic, therapeutic or both.

How is ilioinguinal nerve block done?

At Atlas Pain Care, Coimbatore, ilioinguinal nerve block is a day surgery procedure and it is done in a clean room under ultrasound guidance. Once the nerve is identified local anesthetic is injected around the nerve. The injection takes around 5 minutes.

Post procedure

The local anaesthetic will wear off shortly following the procedure. On occasions, it might last longer. You may experience some leg weakness. Should this occur, ensure that mobilization is kept to a minimum until the weakness subsides.

Pulsed-radiofrequency lesioning of ilioinguinal nerve

When the response to the block is good, but only lasts for a brief period, pulsed-radiofrequency lesioning of the ilioinguinal nerve is offered. At Atlas Pain Care, the radiofrequency electric needle is introduced under ultrasound-guidance and is placed close to the nerve. The proximity to the nerve is then confirmed by passing tiny electric currents. Pulsed-radiofrequency is then performed. It is a daycare procedure that takes 30-45 minutes to perform. You will be discharged home on the same day.

What are the risks associated with this procedure?

This procedure is safe. However, with any procedure, there are risks, side effects and possibility of complications. The most common side effect is temporary pain at the injection site. Fortunately, serious side effects and complications are uncommon. Ultrasound to provide visualization of the targeted structures significantly minimizes risk.
