Temporomandibular Joint Injection

What is temporomandibular joint?

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are those that connect the lower jaw to the skull and are composed of bone, muscle and joint structures. There are two matching joints, one on each side of the head, located just in front of the ears. These joints are some of the most frequently used joints in the body, put to use when we talk, chew, yawn, swallow and sneeze.

Why do I need a Temporomandibular joint injection?

Temporomandibular joint injections are a prescribed line of treatment for relief from pain due to TMJ disorder. Temporomandibular joint disorder is an alteration of the structures that compose the temporomandibular joints. It is widely regarded as the second most common cause of facial pain, after toothache Symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder include joint noises or snaps, jaw muscle pain, limitation in the mouth’s openness, jaw displacement while opening the mouth and dislocations and locks while opening and closing the mouth.

How is it performed?

A combination of local anesthetic and anti-inflammatory medicine are injected under real-time image guidance.
