Ankle Joint Injection

Why do I need an Ankle joint injection?

Ankle arthritis is a clinical condition in which the joint that connects the foot to the leg, known as the ankle joint, has damaged or worn out cartilage. Arthritis of the ankle is characterised by pain and swelling. Fortunately, the condition is not as common as the knee arthritis or hip arthritis. Ankle joint injection involves administering medication, usually an anti-inflammatory agent and a pain reliever, under ultrasound guidance, into your ankle joint to reduce ankle pain due to arthritis or injury.

How Is An Ankle Injection Performed?

At Atlas Pain Care, Coimbatore, you will be asked to change into a hospital gown and taken to our procedure room. Your ankle area will be cleaned with antiseptic solution and draped. The injection site is then identified using ultrasound guidance and a small amount of local anaesthetic is injected into the skin overlying the injection site to numb the skin. The medications are then given through a longer needle that has been positioned in the exact spot using ultrasound guidance. You may feel some discomfort during the injection, but this normally settles quickly. The whole procedure takes around 15 minutes. The pain relief from the injection usually lasts from few weeks to months. This injection is safe, especially when it is done under image guidance.

What are the side effect/risks with ankle joint injections?

Typical side effects include bruising, bleeding, and tenderness at the injection site. More severe ankle injection risks like infection, a weakened or ruptured tendon, and possible puncturing of a vein or artery are very rare.

Please read our FAQ section to know more about the do's and don'ts prior to and after the procedure.
